Ospreys Rugby: 5 years in
The last 5 years, from an Ospreys' Fan perspective 2003/04: Celtic League - Fifth in the CL, fourth out of five Welsh teams, needed a last second try to qualify for Europe Heineken Cup - Five defeats out of six, only one win against Leeds, bottom of the group, conceded try bonuses four times Celtic Cup - First round loss Verdict - A failure but at least we had the excuse of the World Cup and the new squad. Best performance was the draw away to Leinster, the worst was any one of our ten game losing streak. A horrible time for us fans! 2004/05: Celtic League - Top of the tree. Three losses, one draw, sixteen wins. Doubled Scarlets and Cardiff Blues. Heineken Cup - Third. Destroyed by Castres in France, doubled by Munster, really good away win at the Stoop as consolation Celtic Cup - Semis. Lost to the Scarlets. Verdict - Success of sorts. Our first trophy but we had failed in Europe badly. Still, a big improvement on the previous year 2005/06: Celtic League - Seventh. Third best Welsh team. Heineken Cup - Third. Great win against Stade but some pretty bad defeats after that. Try bonus conceded in every away match EDF Cup - One win, knocked out by October. Verdict - Failure. Although we had injuries, we played an awful style of rugby, never competed and went backwards massively. 2006/07: Celtic League - Won it on the last day but suffered some awful performances on the way Heineken Cup - Missed out on lucky loser spot. Knocked out in pool, mostly because of the two Stade games. Doubled Sale. EDF Cup - Lost in Final after good campaign. Awful first half cost us. Really awful. Verdict - Failure in Europe again renders a good EDF run and the Celtic League as little more than scant consolation. 2007/08: Celtic League - Third Welsh team, worst win/loss record, seventh and no away wins. Heineken Cup - Squeezed out of the group in second for the first time. Lost in appalling circumstances in worst performance in our history. EDF Cup - Won it at Twickers against Leicester. Verdict - Another failure due to the Quarter Final disgrace/surrender/submission/debacle. Celtic League form not too great but that might be down, in part, to heavy international workload. 10 games out of 18 hit by call ups, a further four hit by weakened selections due to EDF and HEC workload. EDF was some consolation, but still a failure overall. Summary: Two Leagues, One Cup, One QF place. One successful season. Two seventh places, three Challenge Cup dogfights in the league, one QF humiliation, four HEC group knockouts, one defeat at Twickenham, one EDF knockout. Five losses to the Turks. Four failed seasons. A new coaching team methinks.
